EQUIPMENT QUESTION

Postby Bartman » Thu Nov 07, 2013 9:03 am

Dumb question, but with thicker gloves, how do you veteran hikers get your hand and wrist through the straps on hiking poles? I can't make the straps long enough!

Thanks!

Actually, I take the gloves off, thread the gloves through the loops (without my hands in them), and then insert my hands into the gloves.

Actually I rarely use the straps when going up. I know the risk, you could drop your pole and watch it tumble down something steep, so sometimes when I am hiking where there is a steep dropoff I thread the straps.

The problem for me is I spend the entire hike choking up and down on the poles. The varied grade of skyline in some sections mean I choke down on the pole and back up constantly. Works well for me, but cant do that with the straps connected...

You should be able to replace the strap with your own. Shock cord or para cord with a liner lock should work nicely

I quit putting my hands through the straps after I nearly dislocated my shoulder when I got the tip of the pole lodged between some rocks and fell simultaneously. I landed awkwardly and my hand was stuck in the strap.

I also find that repositioning my hands on the poles frequently in uneven terrain is helpful.
