My two cents in a nutshell. If you're jonesin' for the iPhone but wondering about the service level I say have no fear. Years ago the best coverage in cell sites in Southern California was LA Cellular. LA Cellular was then bought out by AT&T Mobile, which was subsequently bought be Cingular, which has now changed it's name back to AT&T. The towers are the same, and they've added a view, and in nine years of use I've had a handful of dropped calls. Also, Cingular at one time purchased PacBell Wireless which had one of the greatest networks nationwide. There is, however, a difference between the network systems of AT&T and Verizon. Currently Verizons appears to be superior for the blackberry type phone, but I think that AT&T is up to the challenge and I site the iPhone as proof. Also, I wouldn't want to give up my rollover minutes, or which I currently have over 2K. I AM bias, Go AT&T.
That said, the situation with cell service on the C2C trail is a unique one. The trail is within 6 miles from several cell sites, with a direct line of site to these towers. Most hiking areas do not have this geographical feature.
