hiking partner for tram to SJ peak on Sunday

Postby mfq1980 » Fri May 17, 2013 9:06 pm

Hi all,

I'm planning on hiking from the tramway to San Jacinto peak on Sunday. I don't have much experience in the area (I live in San Diego). I thought I would check in here to see if any friendly locals might be going as well and wouldn't mind a partner. Any help or tips for a first timer would be much appreciated. Would going solo (w/ compass, topo, and GPS) be ill-advised or is the route (Round Valley-Wellmans Divide-Deer Springs Trail) fairly easy to follow?

Thanks!

The route is very easy to follow and there should be plenty of hikers along the way.
Happy Trails!

I live in San Diego as well and may be headed up to the peak on Sunday. I will head out from Humber Park though as the drive from SD is quicker and I don't have to wait/pay for the tram. Probably leave SD by 4AM. Meet at trail by 6.

Great news about the route being easy to follow. And Rick, that sounds like a great hike, though I think it may be a little too tough for me. I'm going to take the tram up this first time. Thanks for the suggestion and maybe I'll see you at the top!

You shouldn't have any problem navigating the route. The trail gets many visitors every weekend and you should be able to keep an eye on where they are all going. Keep you GPS on with "tracks" on so you can use it as a reference when returning.

Be sure to bear right (west) about 1.7 miles from the tram where the sign says Round Valley Loop. (You do NOT want the Round Valley loop.) Last week i had to turn someone around that was trying to hike to SJ but turned left at that junction and was almost to Hidden Divide. Also a mile beyond Round Valley at Wellman Divide you want the trail that goes north to SJ. There is a sign. Sometimes people don't see the sign and end up heading down to Humber Park. Otherwise the trail is easy to follow.

Hi mfq. How was your hike? Did you make it to the summit on Sunday?
