Villager/Rabbit Peak footwear advice

Postby SoCalJim » Tue Mar 05, 2013 4:36 pm

I'm planning on hiking to Villager from S-22 soon. For those who've been there, are trail runners adequate? Maybe with the addition of low gaiters? Or would midweight hiking boots with ankle protection be more advisable? (I'm used to wearing trail runners almost exclusively unless I'm carrying at least 20# or the trail is really rough.)

There's a trail all the way - wear the trail runners if that's what you are used to. I'd wear trail runners.

I may be hitting that trail this Sunday. Thanks for the advice.

Definitely use trail runners. You will want the dexterity with some of the loose terrain you will encounter. If you are up there Saturday I just may see you!

I did Villager from S22 on Monday. Wore light weight mid-height hiking boots without gaiters. Trail is quite rocky in places. I would not wear running shoes.

For those who care about the footwear recommendation for this trail: I went to Villager yesterday. I'd been inclined to go with trail runners until I read Florian's reply and it made me think about 13 miles of rocky terrain. I wore hiking boots and was glad for it. The trail is mostly rocky and there are places where one loses the path and has to do a little searching. On the 4800' descent, I was thinking about how beat up my feet would have been if I'd worn trail runners instead. Of course, everyone's different...
