I've wondered about that area a lot too but whenever I drive along 74 it seems as though that whole watershed is either private property or some sort of ecological preserve. Is that not the case along Carrizo?

a later (1977) article in same mag says 2/3 of the trees gone and its on private property (but somehow author managed to visit)

I think Randall Henderson was the founder of the magazine. He was a hard core desert rat.
