Thank you to everyone who has posted info on this site, your love for this special part of Southern California shows in your posts.
I first visited Mt. San Jacinto as a young boy, and after over 20 years, I will finally be coming back. Myself and 4 friends will be taking the tram up, staying in Round Valley one night and in Little Round Valley the second night. We will be up there from the morning of the 26th to the afternoon of the 28th.
Everone except me is new to the summit, and I haven't been there in 20 years. Do any of you veterans have any tips or advice? I am pretty familiar with the expected temperatures, but I am wondering about things like what kind of winds to expect, how much water will be up there, if there are any particulalry good waterfalls or lookouts to see, historical points of interests, particularly good camp spots, etc. Most of us in the group have several years of backpacking experience, mostly in the Sierras in the summer and fall.
I find myself in the humbling position of being 'tour guide' for this amazing place, and I want to do a good job. (AKA I want to look smarter than I actually am.)
I will also be taking on the responsibility of making sure our group leaves nothing behind, stays on the trails, and respects the silence. Any other directions to make sure we preserve this place would be apprecated as well.
Thanks!
Jim H.
