Marion Mountain Trail - Saturday, March 10, 2012

Postby ShawnB » Sat Mar 10, 2012 10:31 pm

Climbed Marion Mountain Trail today to the peak. Snowshoes definitely a must. Just wanted to call out to Mike for his help with navigation. Hope you had a safe trip back!

Did a quick draft writeup here with some pix.

Thanks for the report, ShawnB.

I didn't know that much snow was still there and more coming this weekend. It sounds like you had a good (hard) trip. Thanks again for the info!!!

This is Mike. My friend Huy sent me the link. I've read these posts before, but never joined. Thanks to Shawn for prodding me into joining.

I got back safely. I do this route quite frequently. It keeps me in shape for doing treks in the Sierras. I have rarely had anyone pass me on this route, and nobody in the snow. Shawn is a locomotive. This guy is amazing. I want to hook up with him for another trip in the snow so that I can tie my sled onto him and he can pull me up :D The trip report he wrote is really good. The only thing he neglected to say was that due to it being rather warm (close to 50F up at Little Round Valley), the way back from 9,000' down was like walking on a slurpee.

Due to having Shawn pass me, I have started my local training on Cowles/Pyle's to include a 25 pound pack and ankle weights.

Howdy Mike :)

Welcome to the board. This is a great community of hiking/climbing fools: you'll fit right in

Are you on the Whitney mountaineers route in your avatar?

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Hi Ellen! Yes, that's me on the MR. Huy took the pic when we were up there last August. I used to spend a lot of time between Lake Tahoe and Mount Whitney when I was younger. From the 1990s up until 2 years ago, I rode a mountain bike to stay in shape. I was working on an extremely stressful project and I acquired pneumonia that turned int a bronchitis that would not go away - 18 months:( After a couple of months of no exercise, my doctor said that I should at least start walking. Well, walking turned into hiking. And I remembered how great I felt when I was younger in the mountains. The rest is history. Locally, I try to go at least every other week to SJ or SG. One of my favorite areas is the Ritter range. I'm planning a trip to Ritter/Banner via Ediza this year. Also Tyndall and Williamson. A little time in the Palisades, and Russel.
