this weeks PCT trip Hwy 74 to Idyllwild

Postby Backwoods » Sat Jan 07, 2012 3:55 pm

I made a 7 minute video of my backpacking trip this week from hwy 74 on the PCT. I got a late start and spent the first night at live oak springs it was real nice camp spot about a mile off the PCT and a 500ft climb to get out but it diden't feel like it. on to Ceader springs for the next night it was also about a mile off the PCT and quit a bit lower it has to be one of the nicest camp spot's I have found off the PCT in the San Jacintos. With this trip I have coverd the PCT from the 74 to Black Mnt. The PCT from Mexico to the 74 is next I'm doing a PCT Thru 2012 Just mixing it up a bit since I live up here and it's my hike I can do what I want as long as I cover every part of trail to canada. The next day after hanging around camp way to late I managed to get in 13 miles down of Spitler peak trail were I made camp on a overgrown dirt road in the dark it was flat and soft. The section that comes to mind is the climd out of Fobes Saddle it seemed like a good one and maby I was a bit tired also. From Spitler I went down Apple Cyn RD. I stoped at Hurky Creek CG and got some water and cleaned up a bit. On I went up May valley on MTB trails I know to home in Idyllwild at 39.9 miles on my GPS. The trip was alot nicer than I thought it was going to be and I realy enjoyed it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXJ7ytOc ... L9935_Ivka

Thank's Sally I realy went into this hike with the additude that it was going to be just somthing to just get done after reading up on it on the internet. But I realy enjoyed it and I was carrying a 25lb's at the start 18lb's at the end. and some of the revuers were day hikers.Somtimes I think some others are expecting a sidewalk or somthing as smooth to walk on.This part of the PCT is quite rocky so I looked for intresting rocks on the trail to make up for it proublem solved. Also I think of my sore feet the rocks as mental toughfness training. Sometimes when I'm realy beat I tell myself out loud that I am very lucky to be healthy enough and have the time and enegry to get out and enjoy what nature has to offer so quit your wine-ing Ken my name's Ken. Actualy when I go for a hike that's over 3 day's long and don't see 1 other person I start pondering all kind's of thing's I would never think about in every day life and thats a good thing.

Hi Ken - It sounds like you have a good way of psyching yourself up to take on the challenges of hiking. The one I like best is the one about being greatful that you are healthy enough and have the opportunity to enjoy nature. I use that one a lot! When I was 20 I never dreamed that I'd be able to be a hiking fool at 56!

Live Action Trip Report - I like it!
Just wish I could catch more of the narrative over the music.

Thank's Andy and HHB
HHB. I do have the capability to fade out the music I just figured it out after posting this one. Even so it seem's like every time I get home from a multi day hike I'm busy and end up hurrying thru making a Video also I'm still learning how to edit them and trying diffrent things. This video took a few hours and I had to leave and take care of some biz so I just posted it. I do wish I took the time to fade out the sound and a few other things. So I took over 120 pick's and video's on that hike and spent only 2-3 hour's in a hurry downloading - sorting - editing - and whatever else was involved I think next time I will wait untill I have more time to do it right. I'm doing PCT Campo to Hwy 74 starting on the 01/16 and will be posting a report when I get home. Only time will tell how it turn's out. I do enjoy makeing them and hope the list enjoy's them. It's a creative outlet for me but all the time I spend backpacking makes life a bit busy when I get home.
