I understand the shutdown will start on Sept 10th and run through Sept 21st. I know that some of us will be going through withdrawls during this timeframe. Anyone with counseling skills please step forward help out!
I'm planning on doing Whitney during that time. It's the perfect time of year for Whitney - no snow, cool temps, easy-to-get dayhike permits...
It works out well, too, as it's hard to miss Skyline when I'm in an oxygen deprived stupor above Trail Crest. Anybody else doing Whitney soon? Perry, when are you thinking about the MR?
I have the week starting Sept. 17th off for vacation and have a permit to do the Whitney trail starting that Thursday. There are going to be 5 of us staggering up the trail one more time to see the sites off the top(including 2 first timers). They won't be up there till Wednesday night. I plan to get up there the Saturday or Sunday before (9-15 or 16) and try to score an overnight permit for the NFLPC to do the MR. If unable to score said permit, might be willing to try it as a day hike. If anyone is able and willing to give the MR a try, either as an overnighter or day hike, let me know, as I am always looking for company on trips into that area. Was just up NFLPC a week ago, and might try to get back up there even before September if I can get time off from work. Interested parties get in touch. Hill
You can also go up the MR and down the Main Trail on Whitney as a day hike and you should only need one of those non-quota North Fork Day Hike Permits they started requiring this year. We did it that way a couple of years ago - it was nice because one person with us had never been up either route and he was able to see both in one day.
I'll be over in the North Fork area on August 18th if the weather isn't bad - there's a group of us going to try to day hike Mount Russell - should be pure hell.
