Snow Levels

Postby MWD » Tue Mar 29, 2011 9:40 pm

Can anyone tell me what the snow levels are this week?

I'm leading a group of novice hikers this weekend out of Idyllwild and I'm wondering whether we can make it up to Tahquiz Peak on the South Ridge Trail or whether we'll head to Suicide Rock on the Deer Springs Trail. I would call the ranger station in Idyllwild, but they're not open at the moment. :)

Thanks

You should have no problem with snow getting to Suicide Rock via the Deer Springs trail. There are patches of snow around, but not enough to require snow shoes. The weather is warming up during the days and the snow is melting fast. Tahquitz Peak is another matter. From what I can see Tahquitz still has a lot of snow. Either trail (north or south) can be very icy on the last section. Also, I'm not sure if the road to the South Ridge trailhead is open. Last I checked it was not. I would check with the Forest Service.

Ulysses-

I really appreciate the information...very helpful. Sounds like we'll probably just stick to Deer Springs Trail to Suicide Rock. Great view from that point.
