Newby looking for some tips

Great food for thought. When I solicited advice from an acquaintance re. A good, challenging, solo, celebratory hike He cam up with San J. and I loved the idea... Glad I'm not just jumping into it like I usually do! ...I tend to hear about how dangerous my adventures are AFTER the fact A little ignorance and a whole lot of willfulness I guess!

Looks like this might be a great resource for meeting some like-minded adventurers... Hard to find in the land of silicone soccer moms.
If anyone is interested in mentoring an ambitious protege on a trail sometime... Please let me know!

Welcome to the forum, Squeek!

While there's a whole lot of snow at higher elevations, I think of this as the perfect time for desert hiking -- because as you know once Summer hits it's going to be unbearable out there. Might I suggest heading out to Anza-Borrego...they've got some great hiking spots out there. Here are some just to name a few:

-Hellhole Canyon
-Calcite Mine/South Fork Palm Wash area
-Coyote Mountain
-Rabbit Peak/Villager Peak
-San Ysidro Mountain

I plan on doing Palm Canyon Epic soon. I might be able to do it april 20th if youde like to come. Its about 29 miles....well, heres a link (im not mtnbiking it, Im hiking/running, but wen i search it, i havent found any hike reports on it, only biking reports) anyway, it looks fun n i wanna do it end of april ima start at the top trail n head down to palm springs. im actually doing half this today...again.

I'm glad I found this thread. I'm coming to Palm Spring on April 3rd and I would like to hike to the peak with a friend. Just a few questions.

Can you hike to the peak with just snowshoes?
Can you rent snowshoes at the top of the tram?
How long is the hike if you have to use snowshoes?

Perhaps I can join you for a hike like the one you posted this past weekend? I'm almost always available on a Sunday... Saturdays tend to get booked up with family stuff.

I took my little boys to Indian Canyons on Friday and it was just PERFECT!!! I loved exploring with them and just watching them take it it all in...Such a fantastic place to foster an appreciation for the outdoors in my little guys <3
Can't wait to get out there for some "me" time now

Welcome to the desert! May I suggest the 15mile, diverse and beautiful Guadalupe trail? I don't recommend it alone for the first time, however. It starts in la Quinta cove and goes up to the sugarloaf cafe on 74. It makes for a good shuttle run. Little kids can dig 1000 palms or Mecca/ladder canyon. I too bring my buggers out for a jaunt every now n then. Have fun! So much cool stuff to explore in these parts and south in Anza borrego.
