Loop from tram?

Howdy All :D

I'd love recommendations on a loop hike from the tram (or please direct me to those already posted).

Walt -- Karin and I would love to hike with you again. Would you consider being our fearless leader for a loop hike from the tram? At least this time, we'll know exactly where to find the beer

Yesterday Karin, her son Julian and I hiked up San Jacinto from Marion and came down Devils Slide. It was a great hike. I haven't been on Devil's Slide for over 30 years and I was ecstatic to not have to come back down Marion 8)

We ran into PT Laura near the cabin at the top.

I can't even imagine doing Skyline in this weather  I was hot coming down Devil's Slide.

Ellen

If Willow Creek is flowing (last I heard it was low flow), then if it were me, I would carry as much water as for Skyline in order to make it to the peak and back down to Round Valley (big loop). After a good snow season the loop is a lot of fun because lots of streams are flowing and you hardly have to carry much water. Once Willow Creek and Round Valley dry up....it will take more water than Skyline in cool conditions. Maybe the same as Skyline in hot conditions.

Howdy Perry :D

Thanks -- that is one heck of a loop 8) I've never been on the Willow Creek trail (or whatever it's called), which would add to the enjoyment of the trip. What's the mileage?

Another loop that caught my eye: Summit San J from the tram via Wellman's, descend into little Round Valley. Take Deer Springs trail to the Strawberry Cienega and back up to Wellman's and tram. Any idea of mileage?

Please pardon misspellings, etc. My San J map is from 1981 and is getting harder to read  I should probably frame it.

The water situation is pretty scary -- I've been carrying 3 litters as well as iodine for emergencies. However, iodine is worthless without water.

Walt -- you could make a fortune selling water/sports drinks

Say Perry, are there any routes with views of decaying bananas  ?

Ellen

Hi Ellen,

Jean and I's normal loop is about 12 miles down from the tram past Willow Creek to Saddle Jct and then back up through Wellman Divide to the tram. It adds another 1.2 miles to add in Laws Camp but there is water available there.

I believe that the longest loop up there would be down through Law's Camp, Chinquapin Flat, Saddle Jct, Strawberry Jct, up through LRV to the summit of Mt San Jac, back down to Wellman Divide and then back to the tram. It should be a little over 24 miles. The initial part of the hike is an elevation drop from around 8900 to 7400 at Laws Camp. From there you gain another 1100ft to Chinquapin Flat before dipping 500ft to Saddle Jct. Then the fun begins again. You gain about 900ft climbing out enroute to Strawberry Jct. but then lose it again as you turn westward and down to arrive at Strawberry Jct.

From here its mostly up now and it you catch the 8:00am car up then its around 2:30-3:00pm and we are in the heat of the day. A little over 2 miles north you arrive at the Marion/PCT/7 Pines Jct. It sits at about 8600ft, you've covered 15.5 or so and its time to push on up to the San Jac summit. You gain about 2200ft in 3 miles but get the greatest of views. You also get the benifit of knowing everything else from here to the tram is down hill.

SS mentioned on an earlier post about doing this loop counter clockwise. The idea has merit in that the trees are saved for the afternoon and there would be emergency water at Laws Camp.

An old desert rat has offered to guide me on a route out of Snow Creek that pops out close to the Long Valley ranger station. I'd like to get that out of the way before it gets too hot. If that falls through then I'll be up there doing something or another. There's just so many trails and so few hours on the weekend.

Thanks Walt :D

As usual, you've provided excellent information. Hopefully Karin and I will be able to do one of these loops in the next few weeks.

Have a great hike up Snow Creek on Saturday and please post a trip report!

I've sworn off Skyline until the cooler weather in the fall.

Ellen

Howdy all :D

This Sunday, Karin and I will be doing the 12 mile loop hike from the tram recommended by Walt. We may also summit San J, which would add 5 miles. We'll shoot for the first tram up.

I'm looking forward to hiking new trails.

Ellen
