There were tracks leading up to the beginning of the Sid Davis drainage and then they went every which direction. There was a search for an overdue hiker the day before and these tracks were more circular than anything. Thankfuklly I have done this route before and was able to make my way in the general correct direction. Snow conditions were powdery, sinking about six inches with snowshoes on up until Tamarack valley.
From there the snow became less consolidated and powdery, sinking up to a foot in places. The steeper slope leading up to Miller saddle was tiring. I had to stomp into the slope to gain any kind of purchase. Even still, the occasional slide back to the previous step happened. Slow going. Had to tighten up my switchbacks, going straight up was not an option today.
The snow was much easier to travel on from the saddle to the summit. I was able to make it to the summit at 1:15. It was great making fresh tracks all the way to the top, fresh virgin powder. Took some photos and made my way down to the tram. Was able to get off the mountain before sunset. Succesful day. Great way to start the New Year.
