Snowshoeing on Friday?

Hi, first post here! I really want to go snowshoeing this Friday with a friend. Neither of us has tried it before, and we were just thinking about taking the tram up to Long Valley and having fun walking the trail a bit. I'm a little concerned that the warm weather may have melted a lot of the snow, as indicated in the Conditions thread below. Anyway, my question is where would be a great, safe place to try out snowshoes for the first time? Are snowshoes even appropriate right now up there? Thanks for any info you can provide this newbie!

Generally, Long Valley (basically where the tram lets you off) should be pretty safe, but I don't think the coverage is very good right now since we've had a lot of hot weather.

If there's no decent snow in Long Valley, you can hike up to Round Valley or Tamarack Valley and try those areas instead, but again I'm not sure that there's good coverage.

If no one posts snow conditions here, I'd call the ranger station.
