Crazy weather

Postby halhiker » Thu Jul 15, 2010 3:42 pm

Looks like some crazy weather in the San Jacintos today. The weather service is forecasting wind, lightening and hail. It smells like smoke in Indian Wells.

Anyone closer to Palm Springs have a weather report?

Went up the tram this morning. First car was already booked with a group so got a bit of a late start. The CV hiking club had a scheduled hike but cancelled at the last minute leaving one poor hiker stranded at the valley station. She wasn't familiar with the trails so i invited her to come with me. I'd planned to go to San Jac peak but turned out with a companion that was a bit slower we got to Wellman's about noon and by then was starting to look pretty dark toward the summit so didn't go any higher. I had a poncho and a windbreaker but i don't think my hiking club refuge had anything except a shirt. It's good we stopped when we did. Very nice hike otherwise.

Gusty winds in Palm Springs this afternoon with rain and lightning visible on the Desert Divide. Still looking very dark toward San Jac.

http://mydesert.com predicts rain for Palm Springs tomorrow.
This afternoon at Big Bear they received at least one inch of rain in one hour with lightning and thunder. There were massive cumulus clouds over San Jacinto.

Rode by the museum this morning about 9am and there was a car parked at the trailhead. Didn't recognize the car.

And the car won't recognize its owner -- if he even gets back. Frickin' nuts to go do something like Skyline in this heat. Of course you could start early, really early (like, say May).
