Help... Hiking C2C June 5th???

General Palm Springs area.

Advice well received

Postby peak-a-thon » Wed Jun 02, 2010 8:30 am

All,

Thanks for the wise counsel. My son did Whitney in a day when he was 10, and my daughter has the lowest standing heart rate in her entire class. Overall, I am confident in their ability. Having said that, we live in San Diego, so Cactus 2 Clouds is a hike we can accomplish anytime.

The train of thought that there is no reason to subject the kids to potential challenges by attempting the hike with the projected heat makes sense to me. I look forward to tackling this hike at a future (cooler) date with some or all of you.

Any advice for a cooler climate hike with 5k-6k in elevation gain and 15 miles or so?

Thanks!
Joe

Joe -- Your kids sound strong and you are helping them to think things through, which is an even more valuable asset.

Vivian Creek is closer to 18 miles but about the right amount of gain. It sure is a lot cooler than C2C! San Gorgonio from South Fork is a bit longer (but shorter than advertised).

Joe, Alan beat me to it, but I was also going to suggest San Gorgonio. It's a lot cooler, and Vivian Creek is on the south side of the mountain, so the snow will be melting quickly. Here's a link that may answer some questions.

Good hiking,

Just this past memorial day weekend, i conquered C2C.

I found that the easier part that day was the skyline, which i reached at 9:30 am (5.5 hours). The rest of the day was spent hiking through snow and ice to the top of mount san jacinto, with just tracks leading the way. I got lost many times, but somehow managed to find the trail. It took me a roundtrip time of 8 hours to reach the top from Long Valley and return back the tram. Quite a grueling adventure indeed.
