Pondering this. I've only run one marathon. Was many years ago. I would have been about 28 years old. Took me over 5 hours. About same time it takes me to hike the Skyline. Skyline seems easier. But that might be because i enjoy hiking the Skyline and did not enjoy running the marathon.

had a discussion on here before about this, I think they are pretty close. skyline will be "easier" in the fact that your joints / ligaments/ muscles won't suffer the abuse they would running on paved ground!

Hey Florian, I think there's something to the thought that I hadn't considered before: The emotional energy required to keep up a high leg turnover rate in a marathon is harder for me than that required to keep the legs moving steadily upward against a tough incline. Somehow, I'm just as tired at the end of Skyline, but I don't feel spent. I'll go play later in the day, chasing my kids around or going on a hike together. After a marathon, I collapse in front of the TV and watch dumb shows until I fall asleep.

How early do you need to start to avoid that?

By the way, I will always consider Skyline steep.

Any time before 3.30 am should be good. They will surely split up into fast, medium and slow groups after a while.

Thanks for the heads-up. We'll try to start early enough then. Hopefully we'll meet some of the forum members and can avoid the large crowd.

This will be quite different from my first c2c 2 years ago when I didn't see anybody until I reached Long Valley.
