First Time Jacinto Overnight

Postby Matteye » Fri May 07, 2010 2:53 pm

Hi all. This is my first post on this board, but i've been lurking for a couple weeks now. There is a group of us who've obtained our overnight permits for the weekend of May 15th with an itinerary consisting of hiking from the Tram Station to little Round Valley Camp for an overnight stay. We planned on heading to the peak for sunrise the next morning.

It sounds like there is still a lot of snow up there. Is this route doable without crampons right now?

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

There is still a lot of snow out there...since your goal is for the peak at sunrise, it will be early and still cold, in which crampons will be needed..if you wait till a little later, it will be mushier and easier to go with just boots..

Last weekend, I climbed San Jac and I was glad I had crampons. Even late in the morning, there were some very icy places on the steeps in the shade. While I was stuffing groceries down my neck on San Jac., I met a guy who came up with just treking poles and he said he wished he had crampons. This was at two in the afternoon.

I don't mean to jack your thread...but....

What do you guys think the conditions will be like the first week of June?

Me and my girlfriend plan to head up to the peak at that time. Is the snow still going to be hanging around at that time?

Thanks!

It's been a week since the original post. I was hoping that someone who's been up there could provide an update on the trail between Long Valley and Little Round Valley. Are crampons mandatory? Is the trail easy to follow?

Thanks!

My wife and I are heading up first thing in the morning to Round Valley. We are planning on hiking the summit in the afternoon. We're going to take crampons and snowshoes, just in case. I would rather have it than not!

Otherwise, it looks like its going to be a good weekend!
