Leatherneck Ridge?

Postby KathyW » Wed Sep 09, 2009 7:46 am

Has anyone been up Leatherneck Ridge? I have a description that says it's 8 miles/9000' gain one-way. Is there a use trail along the ridge? I'd really like to try this one sometime.

edit to correct spelling.

Leatherneck ridge?

Postby Cy Kaicener » Wed Sep 09, 2009 9:00 am

Is this the ridge that was named by the rescue service after marines were rescued there?
Whoever rescued them would know about this route.

Cy: This is the ridge that goes up near Desert Angel:

I'll probably just check out the first part of the ridge sometime before I commit to doing the entire climb.

Cy: It looks like there were some marines rescued from Leatherneck Ridge. This article says that it was a long-ago summertime rescue and that's how the ridge got it's name:

Ze: I have that book - it's a pretty good guidebook. I had heard about people hiking up that ridge before I picked up the book, but the information in the book will be really helpful to plan out the climb. I'll probably get to Desert Angel and find that's enough for me, but we'll see.

It takes longer than you might expect and there is some bushwhacking around 5,000 to 6,000 feet. Greg knows a lot about it and has started from different places I think:

The lower half is very wide as a ridge, then it all comes together in a very narrow section. I would avoid the west side. The amount of bushwhacking is worse.
