Altitude Attitude & Dehydration.

Saturday while hiking through MSJ, I ran upon a young chap about 15 years of age. He was lying on his back on top of a large boulder with his eyes closed. I could tell he was in agony. Apparently the elevation was more than he could endure. I asked if he needed assistance, which he declined. He said all he needed was a little rest. I went on my way, since I have seen many in this state, knowing that if he had any sense, he would descend and rejoin his party. After an hour or so, I saw him again.
He was a sight. Disoriented, with foam along the vermillion of his mouth, he was speaking gibberish. I asked if he had water and he said he had run out a while ago. Without hesitation, I gave him a liter I was carrying as back-up for just such occations. I left him in the able hands of 2 park rangers for further assistance. This poor boy did not realize how close he came to dying. As we all know the temperature this past weekend was very high. Diroriented & dehydrated, he could have wondered off into the wilderness.

We realize that not everyone uses common sense when venturing into the "wild". I think it is important that we should watch out for those who appear that they could be in trouble. I usually make a point of saying hello to those I pass along the route. Afterall, we have the appreciation of the outdoors in common. I can sometimes tell, just by the response and how they say it, if they are in over their heads.

Pay it forward

wow pretty cool juguetico, giving that water. I always say something to everyone I see on the trail too. From a distance just to check out what kind a person they are. But I never thought of analyzing responses to see if they are in trouble. Any way pretty cool dude!
