Fern Basin - Boulder Basin

Postby kd » Fri May 15, 2009 8:23 am

Instead of Skyline this weekend, I am camping with my girls at either Fern Basin or Boulder Basin on the Hwy 243 section of the mountain.

Are there any steams currently running in the area that we can use as a hike destination?

Thanks in Advance

We went over to Dark Canyon, only about a mile away, because I remembered it has a good creek running past the campground. I figured we would hike a little higher and find some nice pools. When we arrived there were signs posted all around that you could not come within 10 feet of the creek because of the Mountain Yellow Frog habitat. The creek was flowing very nicely BTW.

As you can imagine this was quite a disappointment, especially for my eight and six year olds.

Instead we hiked up the Marion Mt trail until at last we found a little spring.
It was enough to quickly chill hot feet and legs.

I had a similar experience at the North Fork of the San Jacinto River and posted about it on my blog May 9.

A friend of mine goes to Idyllwild all the time and he says his daughter likes Strawberry Creek. It's more in town and I don't know where they start hiking but if you're going up again I can find out. I usually go higher up so I don't know these things myself.
