Cornell Peak and San Jacinto

Postby Norris » Sun Feb 22, 2009 10:51 pm

Had a great time Saturday with Dave G. and Norma R. climbing Cornell, followed by San Jacinto. We took the first tram up and set off from the ranger station about 8:30 am. We followed some tracks up the drainage to Tamarck, and then started up Cornell. The snow supported Norma, but Dave and I were breaking through the crust about 6 inches. Next time, I think I'll sneak a few rocks into Norma's pack so she can pack down the snow more effectively! We were on top of Cornell shortly after 11:00. Fearless Dave was first up, followed by Norma. I hung out at the notch just above the chimney. We then snowshoed to San Jacinto peak, arriving just after 3:00. We were back down shortly after 5:00. The line for the tram down was excessive, so we enjoyed a beverage on the upper level, followed by dinner in town. Another perfect winter day on San Jacinto!

We saw more skiers than snowshoers on Saturday. Lots of happy faces. A great day on the mountain!

Great trip report!

Howdy Norma, Dave, and Norris,

What a fabulous trip and pictures -- I'm so envious. Lance and I should have headed over to San Jacinto -- the snow on the north side on San Gorgonio is so deep even snowshoes didn't help much. Jeff ran into the same problem on South Fork that Lance and I had on the San Bernardino peak trail.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen
